General

1. Is WorkSource the same as the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC)?

No. WorkSource is one of 28 regional workforce systems created by the Texas Legislature in 1995. TWC, however, is charged with overseeing the activities of the workforce systems.

3. What hours is WorkSource open?

4. Is assistance available for Spanish speakers?

Yes. Each of our centers has Spanish speaking staff available to assist job seekers.

5. Are the services at the Career Centers free of charge?

Yes. All of the services available to job seekers are free of charge.

Job Search Assistance

6. I need help with my job search. Is there someone I can speak to?

Yes. For one-on-one assistance, ask to speak to a Resource Room staff member or an Employment Services staff member. You can also participate in the free, weekly job search seminars offered at each of the Career Centers.

7. Do you have applications for state, county and city jobs?

Yes. Please ask the Resource Room staff how to access these applications.

8. Do you help youth with their job search?

Yes. WorkSource provides assistance to all job seekers at the Career Centers. However, we do partner with other agencies that provide employment services specifically for youth. If visiting a center, please ask to speak to a Gary Job Corps representative. You can also contact any of our four youth partners who manage WorkSource’s youth services program.

9. Do you provide help with creating resumes?

Yes. WorkSource offers free resume writing classes each week at the Career Centers. You can ask a Resource Room staff member for assistance on how to access our resume software and the WorkInTexas.com resume tool.

10. Can I take a typing test at the Career Centers?

Yes. WorkSource administers typing tests. We also offer access to typing tutorial software.

11. I received a call-in card from WorkSource. What do I do?

Please visit or call the nearest Career Center and ask to speak to an Employment Services staff member about a possible job referral. If you are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, please ask to speak to a veterans’ representative.

12. I do not know how to use a computer. Can you help?

Yes. Resource Room staff members can assist you. WorkSource also offers weekly classes on basic computer skills. Please check the calendar for times and locations.

13. Can you provide me with my employment history?

No. There is no agency that maintains work history records.

14. Are there enough computers available at the Career Centers?

Yes. WorkSource provides more than 130 computers at our three locations to assist job seekers. If all the computers are being utilized to capacity, WorkSource limits usage to one hour to allow all job seekers the opportunity to use the computers.

Programs/Orientations/Services

15. When are the orientations for CHOICES or the Workforce Investment Act program?

Please check the calendar for times and locations of our orientations.

16. I am an ex-offender and need assistance. Who can I talk to at WorkSource?

Please ask to speak to a Project RIO staff member if you are an ex-offender needing assistance.

17. Can I get child care assistance?

Certain employment programs such as Choices do offer child care assistance to eligible participants. You may also contact WorkSource – Child Care Solutions to apply for child care assistance. Please click here for more information on applying for child care assistance from Child Care Solutions.

18. How do I apply for food stamps?

19. Do you provide bus passes?

If you are an eligible participant in one of our programs such as Choices or Project RIO, bus passes may be provided.

20. Do you have a program that pays for training?

Yes. For eligible participants, WorkSource may provide training to individuals enrolled in programs such as the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and Food Stamp Employment & Training (FSE&T) programs who the lack the skills needed to find sustainable work.

21. Do you offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at WorkSource?

WorkSource partners with Austin Community College to offer ESL classes at our North Career Center location. For more information, please call ACC at (512) 223-5300.

Unemployment Insurance (UI)

22. How do I apply for unemployment insurance?

You can apply for unemployment insurance online or by phone. For more information on how to apply, please click here.

23. I need to register for work in order to receive unemployment insurance. How do I do that?

You will need to register and create an account in WorkInTexas.com, a free, online job matching tool provided by WorkSource in partnership with the Texas Workforce Commission. WorkInTexas.com can be accessed by any computer with Internet access.

24. I have a question regarding my unemployment claim. Who can I speak to?

The Texas Workforce Commission handles all unemployment insurance claims. Please call (512) 340-4300 for all questions regarding your unemployment claim and check.

25. Where is the unemployment office located?

The office where unemployment claims are handled is not open to the public. You can only contact the office by calling (512) 340-4300.

26. Where do I go for an appeal?

Appeals can be faxed to the number listed on the decision letter you received. You may use the free fax machines in the WorkSource – Career Centers to send in your appeal.

27. Do I have to attend the orientation for unemployment if I already have unemployment insurance?

Yes. Attendance is required.

28. How do I reschedule my orientation for unemployment?

You have seven (7) days to attend the required orientation. Orientations are offered weekly at all three Career Center locations, and you may attend an orientation at any location. Please check the calendar for times and locations.

Wage Claims/Complaints

29. How do I file a wage claim?

Wage claim forms are available at the front desks of the Career Centers. Upon completion, the form should be mailed to the address listed at the top of the form.

30. How do I file a complaint against my employer?

If you think you have been subjected to discrimination, you may file a complaint within 180 days from the date of the alleged violation with the Subrecipient and Equal Opportunity Monitoring Department at the Texas Workforce Commission. 31. My employer is withholding my last check/wages. Can you help me?

If you are unable to collect your wages, you will need to file a wage claim. Wage claim forms are available at the front desks of the Career Centers.
